Diane and Roger Reynolds vacationed with us on our first Agawa Canyon 2-Day Train Tour of the season yesterday and today, and it was a very auspicious start to our train-in wildlife and nature tours. Besides seeing many loons, some with newly hatched chicks, and both mature and immature bald eagles, we sat on the pontoon boat at the end of Long-Time-no-See-Um Bay for almost an hour watching this magnificent Bull Moose. This Young Bull Moose’s antlers are about 2/3 grown and at least 4 feet across, the paddles will grow a bit more through next month and he will grow more points. The lines and layers in the velvet fur on his antlers are formed by the antlers rapid growth. Basically Bull moose grow these antlers in a little over 2 months. The antlers stop growing about the end of July and the then start scraping off the velvet so they are ready to impress the lady moose in the fall. The antlers fall off in late November to December after mating season. This bull Moose is probably just coming into prime age about 6 years old.
